Pregnancy Chiropractic: Tailored Care for Back Pain, Function, and Maternal-Fetal Well-being

Watch on YouTube

Summary

This podcast episode features Dr. Sten Ekberg and his patient, Lisa, discussing the profound benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy. Lisa, experiencing significant discomfort, sought Dr. Ekberg for his distinct approach, which she describes as less invasive and more educational than traditional "old-school" chiropractic methods. The core argument presented is that consistent chiropractic care during pregnancy is not only safe but crucial for effectively managing discomfort, improving overall bodily function, and reducing stress for both the expectant mother and the developing baby.

A key distinction highlighted in the conversation is the personalized nature of Dr. Ekberg's adjustments. Lisa praises the use of tools like the Arthrostim, which allows for precise targeting to "pin point each spot" and tailor treatment to her constantly changing pregnant body. This contrasts sharply with her past experiences of receiving the "exact same way" adjustment every time. The episode emphasizes that chiropractic is fundamentally about enhancing "overall function in the body," which is governed by the brain, rather than merely addressing pain symptoms. It also debunks the common misconception that one should wait until after pregnancy for care, asserting that it's "extra important" *during* pregnancy.

Practical insights include the strong recommendation for pregnant individuals to seek consistent chiropractic care to alleviate discomfort and support physiological changes. The discussion underscores the immense value of an educational approach, where patients gain a deep understanding of "how the body works" and the scientific basis of chiropractic, fostering a lifelong habit of wellness. Furthermore, it introduces the concept of early postnatal chiropractic care for newborns, suggesting adjustments "within their first week" to help them recover from the inherent stress of childbirth.

The broader implications extend beyond immediate pain relief, positioning chiropractic as a holistic health investment for both current and future well-being. By reducing maternal stress and optimizing bodily function, it indirectly supports fetal development and sets a crucial foundation for the child's health from birth. The episode advocates for a proactive, preventative health mindset, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the brain, body, and overall wellness, particularly during critical life stages such as pregnancy and infancy, promoting a scientific and holistic view of health.

Key Quotes

I had a lot of discomfort from being pregnant and knew that it was time to definitely regain more consistent chiropractic care.
I felt there was a different approach here. That would be more effective while I am pregnant. Not just the typical approach like I said I have been exposed to this most of my life so, I guess you could say more old-school just being cracked all the time versus the education that you provide of understanding how the body works, how the brain works, and benefits from chiropractic and then the methods that you've used thus far that are not invasive have also been the reasons that I found you
What I like about it is that I feel that each adjustment is tailored to feeling that day or what's going on with my body And you are able to pin point each spot, rather than being adjusted the exact same way.
And we also want people to understand that it's it's not about pain it's about overall function in the body and that function is is executed and handled by the brain and what interferes with that what gets us outta whack is all sorts of stress
Well it is the exact opposite. It's the other way around. That it's during pregnancy it's extra important because the, if you can reduce the stress than that helps the baby as well so.
And I've learned more in a few weeks of the talks and each session asking questions and understanding how the body works and how it should be working and how chiropractic effects that and it just helps build a value of the investment of coming to chiropractic and making it a life long habit.
So I am very happy to be doing it for myself but also my new person growing inside And understanding that when the little one is born that you can start within their first week and help recover from the stress of the child birth and what babies go through so I value that as well for my child.
Just happy to have the ongoing education holistic view understanding everything from a scientific level.
